What You’ll Do 

The Food Safety Manager is a key member of the Operations Excellence Team, reporting to the Vice President of Food Safety.  This role is required to use sound technical judgement to actively identify, assess, and analyze a broad spectrum of food safety data and metrics; and partner with key stakeholders to reduce and control risk. The Manager is responsible for ensuring we are executing on our food safety standards/protocols, and for driving continuous improvement. Collaborates with cross functional teams to support the development and implementation of best practices in food safety across the company.   

Additionally, this role will manage the Third Party Food Safety Audit program to ensure program integrity and reliability, and conformance with the Scope of Work agreement.

  • Continuously improves how we collect and compile food safety audit/inspection compliance data and develops KPI's to monitor performance.  
  • Through root-cause analysis and data analytics, identifies key themes and trends related to food safety and sanitation.  Escalates learnings for visibility, awareness, and accountability. 
  • Provides and helps implement solutions to facilitate improvement.  Develops verification and monitoring programs to assure effectiveness.
  • Drives operational accountability by tracking execution against agreed upon timelines, following up, escalating and partnering with Operations.
  • Assists in supporting a team of Regional Operations Excellence Managers to drive food safety compliance and improvements across the Company by providing training, guidance, and coaching on Food Safety programs, policies and expectations. 
  • Partners with the Training team on all food safety training programs, written materials, and required certifications to ensure a strong foundation of food safety knowledge is provided and resources/tools are readily available. 
  • As a Subject Matter Expert, provides food safety support and guidance to our Operations teams to help resolve opportunities and help protect internal and external brands. 
  • Assists with Crisis Management: Including product withdrawal, recall; and customer food safety incidents.
  • Provides support during extraordinary events that interrupt business (i.e. boil orders, storms, loss of power).
  • Monitor regulatory agency landscape for emerging concerns, consumer advisories, food safety alerts, proposed regulations, and similar public health and business-impact issues.  Act as a liaison with regulatory officials proactively and reactively as necessary.
  • Manages our Third-Party Audit (TPA) Program:
  • Manages the effectiveness and reliability of the TPA program and Audit Partner in advancing conformance to REEF food safety management policies and practice.
  • Advances processes associated with the TPA program, including but not limited to issue resolution, audit form changes/updates, announcement process, partner contractual requirements, hierarchy updates, and re-audits. 
  • Develops a strategy to incorporate the principles of SMART action planning into the corrective action process (CAP) and works with Operations to ensure CAP is properly completed with urgency.  
  • Conducts technical research as needed across a wide array of food safety, regulatory, and public and environmental health matters.
  • Other duties/projects as assigned.

  • Overnight travel up to 60%.  
  • BS degree.  Preferred discipline:  Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Public/Environmental Health, or Restaurant/Hospitality.  MS preferred. 
  • Experience:  Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience, including at least 3 years of regulatory experience and/or food service industry in a dedicated food safety support role, including exposure to third-party food safety audits.   
  • Minimum required credential is Certified Professional-Food Safety (CP-FS) or ability to attain within 12 months of start date; Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) credential preferred.  HACCP training is preferred as well.  
  • ANSI accredited Food Protection Manager Certification
  • Strong technical knowledge of retail food safety and HACCP is a must.  Good understanding of the FDA Food Code and retail food regulations and regulatory landscape in the U.S. 
  • Food Safety Audit principles/Health Inspection process. 
  • Adept in conducting technical research.  Intellectual curiosity is required. 
  • Proficiency in MS Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
